I just had one of the most amazing beer and food combination's of recent months. For lunch today, I paired a bottle of Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen with a pulled pork BBQ sandwich. A Heavenly combo! What a unique beer.

Just try the Schlenkerla Bock with the same or back ribs!!
Also, look on the Schlenkerla web site for their Bamberg Onion recipe. I had this at the brewery Bierstube based on a recommendation from another patron - a large, sweet onion stuffed with ground beef, toppped with mashed potatoes, covered with a brown gravy made with - you guessed it, Rauchbier -- lordy.

Or the Marzen with some good smoked beef brisket. Was the combo I broke into the Rauchbier world with. Excellent.
steveh, I saw that concoction on a travel show that visited Bamberg. On TV, it looked absolutely.....putrid. I'm guessing if I were in Bamberg, the aromas and atmosphere would tempt me to dive right in.
Prost!

I did not sample the Bamberg onion when I was there but I dearly love fresh rauch and Schlenkerla is one of the best. Of the three varieties that we can get in the States I really like them all but the weizen is possibly my fav. I can't always find that one.

Really? Because when the plate hit the table I was enthralled!! And it was so huge, I didn't think I was hungry enough to finish it...then I had the first bite -- wow!
And yes, aromas, flavors, atmosphere with the great patrons -- I'm sure it all helped - the little, gravity tapped keg of Schlenkerla on the pass-through service bar in the dining room -- beer lover's delight!
What show was it? And Chaz, you left out a verb in your first sentence above - "I Did not..."

Thanks Steveh. I've fixed it.
And what you said about the atmosphere and the gravity tapped keg is absolutely correct. I've told the story before but my single best beer moment EVER was in that place. Everything was just right.
I need to get back there.

Yeah, it's probably something that is more appealing in person - aromas, atmosphere, etc. count for a lot. On TV, it looked like a big pile of.....<expletive>
Pretty certain it was the Thirsty Traveler where he goes to Germany and visits Beck's in Bremen, Schlenkerla in Bamberg and Oktoberfest in Munich. Solid episode.

Schlenkerla is one of my favorite beers and smoked beers are probably some of the most misunderstood styles out there.

JT Whitney's brew-pub in Madison had one on tap at the Quivey's Grove festival this past weekend. They were doing it right; malty smooth and just the right amount of smoked malt without going overboard.
You Mad-Town folks should go find it!

Very nicely said! I've never heard a beer described as such before. Good stuff!
