We have water delivered every month. The water guy shows up today and I asked him if he had glass. They have glass!!!! I got 4. The deposit was like $15. So, if you have bottled water delivered you can get glass carboys a little cheaper and they deliver!

Brilliant!
My township's well water has been under an arsenic level scare for 6 months and I am so sick of buying bottled water each week, I should get something going with one of the water delivery companies and get brewing water at the same time.

When you pay for the deposit, you really pay for the carboy. Whether you return it is up to you. You will have to ask for glass when you set up delivery. Ours is Mountain Valley Spring water. It will save you money and you can aquire a collection of carboys. If you have them picked up you get the deposit back. So, I guess FREE carboys. You just have to pay for the water. Ours is $5-6 for 5 gallons inc. delivery.

If it's called a "deposit" - they want it back. If it's called "get a glass carboy free with your water" then you can keep it.

"Stealing" depends on whether the company considers the $15 a motivational amount of money or the cost of the carboy - and thats only if you keep them or keep an excessive number of them. Carboys are priced at close to $15 so the company may actually consider that paying for the carboy in case they don't get it back or just to cover the cost of enough to maintain water distribution. They trade most people out every delivery because most people don't want the carboys. Just be upfront with them and see what they say.
I'm sure they will be happy for the water business as long as they don't stop by more often than you drain carboys of water. The cost of how many carboys you keep on hand is covered by you.
I do think it would be rude (at best) to give the carboys back with dried wort in them. They do have to clean the carboys, but they don't have to clean dried wort.
Anyway, $20 isn't much money and certainly isn't worth dealing dishonestly with anybody.

Hmmm....goes back to the old keg arguement.....
Do they have 6.5 gallon carboys?

I think you guys are looking into this way too much.
You can use and return at a cost of $0.00 if you drink the water anyways.
I spoke with the delivery guy and he didn't care. What if one of the carboys broke for some reason? You paid $15 for it so it's now yours.

I'd bet on 5 gallon carboys only.

He is going to love getting a carboy all caked up with krausen and trub in return for a nice one full of clean water.
I would imagine that any water company would have to do a caustic wash of any carboy between deliveries. What if the previous owner spit in theirs?
So, if you rotate regularly and turn yours back in, then you should be golden. Just check with the delivery guy before you give him back a nasty carboy. You may find that they just shut you off after that. Or they may not care, in which case go right ahead.
On an ethics note, it doesn't matter if the carboy cost the water company $.99. If you are leasing it, you don't own it. If you want to buy it from them for $15, ask them. They may just do that. They must buy enough to get them darn cheap. But don't just take it for the deposit money. That is to pay for when you drop it, not when you steal it. Just because I have auto insurance doesn't mean I don't care you steal my car.

I would imagine that some decorum is in order if you use a someone else's carboy to fement in....sheesh, don't return caked up, at least grab the old carboy brush and clean it up & then give it a good rinse.
In the subject of keeping it, if you pointedly tell them--"hey, I want to keep this", and they say "okay". They I would say you are okay. They may even suggest that they'll give you new carboys instead of the old ones in circulation. At the very least $15 is cheaper than normal....AHS sells the five gallon for 23.00

I just got 2 at the dump, free and legal. Somebody gave them to the site supervisor and he didn't have anything to do with them so he gave them to me.

while everyone is talking about the deposit and stealing and such... I have been pondering something, I have been lookin on ebay at brew pots and there are people on there trying to sell a-busch kegs for like 30-70 bucks. I don't understand, I know when you get kegs they have like a 10 buck deposit. But, woundn't be illegal to resell one?

The deposit on a keg wouldn't cover the cost. The price on a carboy at $15 would, and then some. And I think is illegal to sell kegs unless you bought them. Mabey they found them at a scrap yard too.

They generally offer some sort of proof in the auction text that the kegs were legally aquired. If they don't they should be reported to ebay to be removed.
