so yay I went to port brewing right when I got off and had a pint of old viscosity then a growler fill of shark bite to split between me and my dad. So what brewery do you like to hit uo afte work (if not brewery brand of beer). just drunkenly curious

We tend to hit a chain bar called Brothers. I think they have locations in College towns in the midwest. They have a good tap selection and you can't beat half price pitchers during happy hour. I typically order Empyrean Ales Third Stone Brown (very local micro).

I just come home after work and the gym and have a homebrew since there aren't any breweries around here, nor any decent bars. Fridays I'll treat myself to a Belgian 750 but otherwise beer choice depends on the weather more than anything else.

Same here, sans gym. And homebrew. Too lazy/too little time for either. Pretty much whatever's cold in the beer fridge is fair game. If I'm lucky, there are some Real Ales from Blanco. If I'm REALLY lucky, we will have recently made a beer run to a town that actually HAS good beer, and there will be something new or exotic chillin' in the fridge. The usual fall-backs--readily available here, if you can beat the other beer geeks who know the delivery schedules at the local paint stores--include Victory Prima Pils and HopDevil, Breckenridge Trademark Pale Ale, and the ubiquitous SN Pale, Porter, and Stout.

And on days when I've been rode hard an' put up wet: nothin' beats a nasty ol' ice-cold Lone Star;) .

Usually take a drive to one of my locals for cheap growler fills. Coastal Extreme fills any clean growler for $5 - gotta get down there for some Ofest soon. Decided to hit Buzzards Bay Brewing today. Place was packed on a Sunday afternoon. Tough choosing between the Pilsner, Black Lager, (English) Pale Ale, Hefeweizen (hopped up) and the Oktoberfest. I opted for the fresh Ofest - just kegged on Thursday. Drinking very well right now.

Prost!

Nothing here, either. When we lived in Oceanside, one of us would take the bus to work and the other would drive and we would meet at the Pizza Port in Carlsbad. <sigh> those were the beer-drinkin' days.

If I have a keg of home brew in the fridge I go for that. If not I usually have some Lagunitas, Deschutes or other good brews to drink. I don't normally go out to pubs or brew pubs but when I do there is McMenamin's or Off The Rails close to home (both locals).

I haven't been out to a bar since I got my DWI 9 years ago. But when I did, it was the Gingerman or Waterloo Brewing Company in Austin. Sadly, Waterloo Brewing Company is no more.

:)

There's a really cool little pub near my office. If I work late, I like to go there and have a few beers and dinner, listen to the band. Last night I had some damn good Bitter and Twisted there.

I would never go in that place late at night, but right after work, it is an okay place. With the waitresses they have there, we call it the downtown hooters.

Dude, Texas is pretty hurtin' as far as beer selection, eh?
I know it's so big that it is hard to generalize though. Where do you live in Texas?

I'm trying to get an idea of how many states offer piss poor beer selections. I know that in some southern states any beer above 7% abv is ILLEGAL. Tennessee, and one of the Carolinas still observe this law I believe.

Don't think I'm dissin' Texas though, one of my fave beers of all time was brewed there: the venerable Celis White.

Pierre is back in Texas and going to be brewing there again from what I hear. What do you think of the Michigan incarnations of the Celis brews?

Pierre's going to be brewing with the guys from Real Ale. As good as their regular offerings are, I expect to hear great things about their new collaboration.

I live between Waco and Temple; I'm essentially equidistant from D/FW and Austin. Both cities have some really good paint stores, and Austin in particular has several reputable brewpubs. Houston has a few good places, too, but they're three hours away and the traffic's atrocious.

There are a couple decent paint stores close by; I won't ever find anything new and exotic there, but I know they'll always have a few dependable old standbys. Matter of fact, just last night I picked up:

Real Ale Full Moon Rye Pale Ale
Mendocino Red Seal Ale
Flying Dog IPA
St. Arnold's Elissa IPA
Shipyard Export
Traquiar (sp?) House--which is actually new to me

So I get by.

At any rate, it beats livin' in a big city!

What do you think of the Snake Dog IPA? I wasn't terribly impressed - maybe it's better on tap...

I've had it before; good but hardly a standout. As I said, except for the Scottish beer I'd had all those others before. If I want something new and exotic, I have to go ahead and suck it up and travel.

There is, in fairness, a Cricket's franchise in downtown Waco. We go there on the rarest occasions, like if we've taken the girls to the zoo or Cameron Park on the river. But it's always daylight hours--nearly always the weekend--and you can't always depend on the taps being fresh; some days they're just plain out of stuff. Plus, the Baylor kids wait tables there, and we've encountered very few who've been any good at their jobs:rolleyes: ...

HA! I've only had it on tap and thought...maybe it's better bottled. Rare but possible. Haven't bought any to find out.

Cheers!

Didn't really care for the IPA - the pale is wonderful, and the in heat wheat is similarly good. Gonzo may be their best beer, though, and not just because it's so strong and stiff.

Ok, so you do get by. That makes me feel better. Nothing worse than a beer connoisseur being trapped in a beer backwater.

I tasted the Michigan Brewing Celis beers a few years ago at the GABF in Denver. I thought the White was *almost* there, but not quite. It was good to taste it again, though, and I was happy.

I'll be on the lookout for anything with Pierre's name on it. :)

I attended a tasting many years ago hosted by Pierre himself. I'll agree his beers were all fresh and excellent. I did like the Wit and it is a style I like to enjoy in the warmer months. I've not tasted any of the Michigan brewed Celis but I was gratified to see Pierre has returned to brew again. I think there might be a new bio of Pierre that has been recently published.
