Hey All,

First off, thanks for all the help. I feel I can get much better advice than reading a brewing book (though I've done that as well).
I'm onto my second batch, a lawnmower ale, and I'll try to drink the first batch, some random amber, on Labor Day. I'm not to confident on that one, but I figure the worst it can be is very low alcohol.
Anyway, I was tinkering with my setup. Currently I've got the 6.5 gal primary bucket, then a secondary glass carboy, auto-siphon, bottle filler, etc.
I wanted a bottling bucket, but was convinced by my local shop to just buy a spigot and drill a hole into my primary, and use that to bottle from (with the bottle filler, of course).
I figure if I clean it well, I should be all set for the next batch.
And now for my real question. Instead of using the siphon - yes it's auto, but gravity is guaranteed to work every time - couldn't I just go from:

Primary> spigot to tube into>
Carboy> siphon to Primary (now used as bottling bucket)>
Primary>bottle filler on spigot to bottles

Or does the siphon somehow make more trub sit in the bottom of the primary than pouring through the spigot?

And how high up should I drill the hole into the primary to avoid sediment clogging the spigot?

Sheesh, that's a lot of text.....

I used my primary for a bottling bucket for my first few batches. Then I got another carboy and the bottling bucket became JUST a bottling bucket.

Put the botom of the spigot 1 inch above the bottom and you'll be OK. Remember to disassemble the spigot after every use , soak it in bleach and rinse well. I used a food grade plastic bucket with a spigot as a bottling bucket for years. There will be beers you brew that don't require any secondary time so then you'll need a second bucket for bottling.
