Most of this type of item is usually in working order. You can go look at it if you want by calling utmb's surplus warhouse, and take your extention cord

I wouldn't worry about that too much. Utmb is a huge research facility, but 99% is animal, bacteria, and virus research. And that's exactly what's in my home freezer right now. Or it was untill I converted to a beer cooler. I would hesitate to buy one of there fancy lab freezers though, like this one

a minus 80 deg freezer.
or this one

fancy expensive lab freezers for fancy lab experiments, I don't think so...and they are single units meaning they might be broken anyways. But when they sell a whole bunch of somthing at once, like 5 regular chest freezers, that means some department bought a whole bunch of new ones, and chances are good that they all work, or they would have showen up as single units earlyer. That purchasing/turnover stratagy is how big inefficiant governemtal bodies do buiness. I love my job, and all the stuff I buy in their auctions. You should see my shop. Now if I could only find the NASA surplus auction...

It is over here at Cape Canaveral. And it is a treat to just wander around in. Buildings full of strange machinery and spare parts. A guy nearby has a sounding rocket booster motor in his front yard as a planter! It's the place to go when you want a bunch of vintage '80s computer equipment.

Those freezers go for about $12-15K new. Unfortunately they do brake down quite easily if not handeled correctly and a new compressor, if you can get one is also quite costly.
works in a buliding with quite a few of those babies, also very noisy as they get older.
