View Full Version : How does someone start distributing their beer?
Hi Guys,
How does a newbie brewer begin distributing their beer?
* I know this should be on probrewer, but I like the advice from you pros.
Other: Let say someone registered with the government and then got their state license and then set up a small bottling line in their basement for bottling 22oz. bombers. So now they have 100 cases ready to go. How does he get started distributing? Should I contact local bars to set up a beer-tub table and sell $3 pints and kick a buck a pint to the owner? Is there a distributor wharehouse/hub I should contact? Any advice will be helpful, major research project underway.
Thanks

As a "home brewer" I can't say. As a micro brewer, it is my understanding through conversations with my pub owner, that you cannot distribute your brew outside of your establishment WITHOUT going through a beverage distributor.
Not a lot of help, I'm sure. You'll most likely need several licenses to produce product for sale, (business license, alcoholic beverage license, business permit, health department approval... probably many other formal government things as well ).
BTW, before you running down and telling all these agencies that you have product and are doing this, feel them out for info first as to the requirements to set up such an establishment. Most times there are stiff penalties and fines for operating without approval, so you don't want to tip them off to your status.

Yep, this is the unfortunate side of the three tiered system this country has in place. Of course, you can register with some beer festivals and give away your product.

The best you can do is just give it away. PM me for my home address.
So, it looks like the best way might be to contact a distributor?
I do recall from a reliable source here on the board that both Sam Adams and New Belgium were both started in the owners basements. So, if they can do it we can.

Some states do allow self-distribution. In NH, Franconia Notch Brewing Co. owner John Wolfenberger fought to gain the right to do so after one of his in-state distros failed miserably at doing the job. Put a huge burden on him, as he also brewed & sold the beer, but he was happy to deliver fresh beer in person to his accounts. Sadly, his building (which he was leasing) was sold and is now a Walgreen's, leaving him and his beer out in the streets. I've heard he is still looking for a place to rebuild, but...
Cheers!
