I would like to make a california common but, I can't ferment any lower that 72 degrees during this time of year. Will I be able to use a lager yeast without ruining the taste of the beer. I would use the san fransico lager yeas from white labs if I were to try and make this style. Any suggestions you all have would be great.

72º is probably 10º higher than you'd want to try fermenting this. you'll get more esters and won't have the clean, crisp lager characteristics you're looking for.
brew something else for now, and try the steam beer in the fall when it gets cooler...
