Ok, I've seen recipes call for "Flaked Oats". I went out and got some for a recipe, but the price was far more than the cost for regular oatmeal.
Has anyone ever compared beer using flaked oats vs oatmeal?
While I'm at it, I might as well ask, what's "rice", when in a homebrew recipe? I know there is "rice" and "flaked rice", is rice just your everyday dried rice?

my local homebrew shop doesn't even carry flaked oats for that reason- oatmeal is cheaper and (as they told me) the same thing. so, i went over to the supermarket and bought some quaker oats! be sure NOT to use instant oat meal!
i think rice can come in any form that other grains come in- flaked, malted, unmalted, extracts, etc.. not sure though, i've never used it.

I use cut oats from a bulk store…dirt-cheap. In my last wheat I used about 2 pounds.
I could be wrong, as it has been a while since I read this but flaking is a way the grain is processed to allow the fermentables to be easily mashed out. If I remember the grain is partially cooked in water then dried. I think this is more of a concern to all-grain brewers then extract with specialty grains.
Anyone can feel okay to correct me on this…either way I’ll look it up when I get home.

Flaked oats are basically the same things you will find in the store. Quick oats IIRC are what you want, they would be the same as pre-gelatinized brewers flakes.
