My dad brought me back an article he read while on his trip in Poland... I made a PDF of it... http://www.shirtees.net/polish-beer.pdf

Thanks for the PDF!

My wife is from Poland (Silesia) and we get back every year. In the last 10 years my tastes went from Zywiec to Tyskie. Tyskie having a rounder flavor (as I remember). Then last October my wife and I stopped at a pizza joint in Raciborz (southern Poland) and they had Tyskie on tap. I was the most cider-flavored beer I've ever had. Didn't even finish it. My theory is that as Tyskie has gained in popularity they have suffered from the growth. (Throw a little more sugar in the kettle Jan!)
Anyway.....now I'm back to Zywiec!

Oh yeah! One last thing ....on my last trip I found Pilsner Urquell, in cans, that was brewed under contract, IN POLAND! They had changed the label from "brewed from the original source" to "brewed from the original recipe" .

"Under contract"? I thought SABMiller brewed it in their own brewery in Poland and, according to the below article it's strictly for the Polish market only (...for now...).

(When SAB first bought P.U., there was a nasty suggestion/rumor about a Canadian version for the US- but I'm hoping that was just a nightmare...)

Parker, you can't judge Tyskie by one source, sounds to me like the pizza joint had some old beer on tap - I've tasted similar problems here when a beer doesn't move.

Yes, I realize that- I just thought it odd that they'd use the term "under contract" since in the article it calls the SABMiller owned-Tychy brewery a "Pilsner Urquell" satellite brewery. (I don't know, would SABMiller have to literally "contract" one of it's own breweries to brew a beer it owns? Any corporate lawyers here today <g>?)

But, then, the headline itself is confusing, as well, with "to open brewery" when, obviously, the brewery already existed and, I take it, continues to produce other local brands (?).

Hmm, nearly 5 year old article. I suppose many things could have changed since, who knows? Of course, "contract" is also Parker's word.
Need to dig around a little.

Yeah, that's what I was asking, but, according to this SABMiller site, they DO use "brewed under license" for both Pilsner Urquell and Miller Genuine Draft in Poland.

http://www.sabmiller.com/sabmiller.com/en_gb/Our+brands/Brand+information/Brands+by+country/Poland.htm

OTOH, they list "South Africa" as the "country of origin" for MGD... so, who knows what to believe with these Mega-multinational brewers?

(Me-after looking at that site- I'm thirsting for a bottle of "Dog in the Fog" 'cause who wouldn't want a beer that "...will amuse your taste buds with its unique sense of British humour..."<g>?)

Yah. Anyone else have "Spring Surprise" or "Crunchy Frog" come to mind?

S.

"Well then it wouldn't be crunchy now would it?"

You guys are right ....I came up with the word "Contract" and it was in Poland that I saw the cans of Pilsner Urquell. I actually have no idea if it was a SAB owned brewery or not....sorry for the confusion! Also, "Dog in The Fog" is a strange brew....it's really sweet...I mean REALLY sweet! Beet sugar "sweet". It was possibly the most shocking beer I've ever tasted.

By the way ....I'll give Tyskie another try. When done right is fantastic. The acetaldehyde (cider flavor) came from either too much sugar (refined) in the recipe....or bacterial contamination. I'm just guessing it was sugar .
