hi,
i am new to homebrewing. i have a recipe question. i have a 4 lb can of john bull stout extract. i have heard that you can use a little bit of coffee or coffee beans to add a little more flavor to your beer. i was wondering if anyone has done this. if so, how much did you use and what kind of dme did you add as well? thanks for any help.

Have you tried the recipe by itself yet? I have found my stouts and B&T's to have much more coffee flavor in them that I had anticipated just normal...

I brewed a coffee stout once. While it was on a larger scale the principle applies. I did not add coffee to the mash or the kettle. I completed primary and when I went to secondary I added the grounds in a nylon bag to steep.
I brewed the batch (in this case 5 bbls of a dry stout) and racked off some to a 10gal Corny keg. In the corny I had prepped and added 5 lbs of Columbian Roast and allowed it to steep for 3 days before racking it back and transfering to package.
Came out well IMHO.
Word of caution, the volume in the bag will expand so be mindful!

Sounds like freaking Espresso to me!!!
I'm going to have to try it...slowly....
I don't want Juan Valdez in my basement or anything like that....

Hey brewmonkey - just so I understand...
You racked off 10 gallons then steeped 5 lbs coffee in it. Then you racked the 10 gallons of coffee steeped beer back into the 5 bbls? So the proportion was roughly 5 lbs(of coffee)/216 gallons?

Yes, it was 5lbs of Coffee in 5bbls (165 USG though) 216 USG is 1 USG shy of 7bbls.
