Is there a correlation between the more independent-minded quaffers and their choice of radio station? I'll try to list some of the more common stations, and if I don't list yours, reply to "other" and include your choice in the text of a reply.

For us non Chicagoans, please explane the formats of the stations. I'm always interested in observing the tastes of RB folks when it comes to music.

WXRT is Progressive Rock - rare oldies, progressive rock from the past 30 years, and new stuff (this is the station whose playlist I've forwarded to you in the past, Chaz.)
WBEZ is a Public Radio station with a local flavor
WLUP is Classic Rock with some newer stuff thrown in
WFMT is Public Radio with a wide variety of programming
WSCR is Sports radio - home of the World Champeen White Sox
WBBM is News Radio with other newsworthy features
WDRV is more Classic Rock

Left off is probably Chicago's most popular station, WGN Radio - News and Talk - and home of the Cubbies.

I tend to switch between XRT, WGN, BBM, and SCR - when the Sox are on -- and a Milwaukee news station, WTMJ - mostly because their weather forecast is closer to what I get! But for music, it's all XRT -- anything else just reminds me of high school.

I started listening to the Nine FM, which goes by the we play anything, and so far they have not disappointed. In chicagoland they are available to listen to on 92.5, 92.7, and 99.9, a coverage map and able to listen live online at We Play Anything - Nine FM. (http://weplayanything.com/)

Where else can you go from listening to the group "LIVE" to Barry Manilow's Coppa Cabana. WXRT may fit this bill also by Steveh's description.

Oh yeah and starting at 9:04 this morning they are playing an A through Z Weekend. So they are playing all of their music titles in Alphabetic order. I just remembered that after checking their music log. Should be through Z by Tuesday.

While you'd never hear Barry Manilow on 'XRT, you'd definitely run the range of something like Coldplay to Cream to Tom Tom Club to Wilco to BB King to Tom Waits -- with a Waco Brothers, Bobby Bare Jr, or Neko Case thrown in for fun.

'XRT is also manned by live, local DJs who know and love the Chicago area - they make you feel at home.

Yeah, I never understood why radio stations did that. When the Mix started doing that several years ago was about the time I completely stopped listening to them. The live DJ was already there, but then this automated voice would annouce the next song.

The Nine FM, they are normally live DJ's, except the last weekend during their A to Z list, barely heard a live voice in between songs, probably gave everyone a five day weekend.

I don't remember which station, but one Chicago are DJ visited my Wegman's, grocery employer for any that do not know, last year. He was so blown away by my store that he went back to Chicago and talked about us on the air. He could not believe that the best story he had for his listeners was about a grocery store but he was impressed. He went on about how could Syr have this great store and Chicago did not. It got funny when some listener called and gave directions to the Chicago Wegman's, of which there is none.

We know this as the owner of the station, who told the DJ to come to our store, sent us a copy of his show the day Wegman's was the topic. That is my Chicago radio experience.
