Just sampled my Scotch Ale today, which has been in 2ndary for 2 weeks. I think, gents, that I have finally produced the elusive malty brew that I have been seeking. Great malty flavor & not cloying at all. I will bottle this weekend and will try to exercise restraint in letting this stuff age 'til Thanksgiving. OG was 1.078; FG was 1.015...a tick over 8% abv. If anyone is interested in the recipe (all grain) let me know.

I brewed a scotch ale from a kit, and it was F%&*'in Awsome!, I'm going to try and re-make it using just raw ingrediants I picked up at the LHBS, hopefully it will come out just as good, I only brew with extract at the moment, but I would like to get your recipe just the same.
Mine turned out with a smokey roasted flavor, not to strong, just a nice accent. and it went down very smooth, I have only a few left, I may have too lock them up to keep them safe ;-)

Ray and Croc - I'd love the recipe or the source of the kits, I'd like to try a scotch ale after I make another round of KC Wheat for my girlfriend. We tasted some that had been in the bottle for 10 days last night, and now she's worried that it isn't going to last it tastes so good!

Michaewa,
The kit I used was from "brewers best" - scotch ale (and I used WPL005 for the yeast instaed of the kit yeast), you should be able to find it at any place that stocks that brand of kit.
I hope to re-produce it with just raw ingredients, if that works out I'll let you know also

Sounds good! I am going to be brewing a Scotch ale here in the next couple of weeks. I would like to have a look at your recipe and compare notes to the one I have concocted.

Hey, gents....here is the recipe:
--11 lbs. British or Maris Otter pale malt
--1 lb. British 60L crystal malt
--3/4 lb. carapils malt
--1/4 lb. chocolate malt
--1/2 lb. aromatic malt
--8 AAU Fuggles hops (2 oz. of 4% alpha acid units)
--1/2 gal. starter White Labs Edinburgh Ale yeast, made 1 day ahead of time
Mash all grains in 4 gal. 175* water (this made my mash temp. @ 156*) for 1 hour. Sparge with 5 gal. 170* to 175* water for at least 45 minutes, collecting 6 to 6.5 gal wort. Bring to boil, add all Fuggles hops & boil 80 minutes. Primary ferment was 1 week; 2ndary was 2 1/2 weeks. For you extract guys, replace the pale malt with @ 9 lbs. liquid malt extract OR @ 7 1/2 lbs. DME, & steep the other grains in heated water for @ 1/2 hour. Primary ferment was @ 1 wk.; 2ndary was 2 1/2 weeks. Let me know if any of you guys do this & how it turns out. I am going to try to let this age in the bottle for @ 3 months. CHEERS!!!!!!!!!
