hey,
please exuse my ignorance. i was just wondering how exactly do keg couplers work? do they have valves/components that block hte flow of beer without extra pressure (i.e. o2 or co2 being pumped in) or can i just flip a keg upside down and attach it to a normal faucet/tap and still expect a good pour?

No, it has a tube that goes all the way to the bottom, called a spear, that feeds the beer from the bottom of the keg. Think of a spray paint can, when you turn it upside down, you'll get what's in the tube then nothing. There has to be some external source to pressurize the keg to push the beer out.
