Hi Guys,

The brown foam from the fermentation is getting close to the top of the carboy. What should I do if it rises into the 3-piece airlock?

Thanks

If your fermentation is that active, use a blow off tube instead of the airlock. Basically just a piece of tubing through a stopper with the end submerged in another container. Works the same as an airlock but allows for the vigorous action you're seeing.

Hmmmm,
Can I use my racking cane ? I'll connect the free end to a hose and I'll submerge it in a jug of water?

You would be better off with a hose through the stopper or a large diameter hose that will fit inside mout of carboy. I ay this as much junk will go through and stick to inside of you blow off tube. It may be hard to completely clean it later so you may not want to usae your racking cane.

Just use a bit of hose into the jug. If you don't have a stopper that fits the hose, I've used a wad of aluminum foil shaped around the hose and the carboy neck in a pinch.

I switched from a bung to a carboy cap and put a hose on and then put the end of the hose into a jug of water. I forgot to whip down the mouth of the carboy with cleanser before putting on the cap.

Do you think I contaminated the batch?

You should always whip it. Whip it good.

Sorry for the Devo reference, I doubt you contaminated anything.

I found that one of my hoses [purchased in my hunt for a hose that fit my bottling wand without allowing air in around the wand, and the one I am referring to here was slightly too large inside] fit the inside tube of my three-piece airlock, so I plug it in there for blowoff. When bubbles stop coming out, I replace the hose with some water and the inner airlock piece.
