View Full Version : Canned beer suggestions

I'm going to the Formula One race in Indy in two weeks and they don't allow glass to be brought in, but do allow cans. In the past they only sell the Foster's oilcans and i've just dealt with it, but this year we have box seats and the food and drinks are supposed to be provided (race day only and i'm sure it'll be Butt Light). But we go all weekend and I wanted to seek some good canned beer, but heck... i haven't bought beer in a can in years (expect maybe guinness) and not sure what's out there. I just don't pay much attention to it.
So I've got a few places of which to shop around town and i'm looking for a few suggestions.
Some I've seen are: Guinness obviously (which I'd nix for a long hot day) and Boddingtons (been awhile since i've had it and don't remember it much)
..... what else might I look for out there?
TIA!

Boddington's and Abbot Ale ain't great, but will do in a pinch. If you can find them, get Dale's Pale Ale or Old Chub Scottish style ale. Fantastic brews--in a can! Made by Oskar Blues, Lyon, CO. Best of luck in your search!

I've seen Bass in a can recently, pint cans.
If it's hot, so perhaps a cervesa? Doesn't Tecate come in a can? Bring along a lime and some margarita salt for the can's rim!

I'd second the Dale's and Old Chub recommendation. Both are excellent!

I've had old chub and it was great.
Paulaner cans its Original Munich, a delicious helles lager. Then, there's Newcastle

Just had the Dale's Ale last night, excellent option.
Yuengling (if its available and not too "macro") has a variety of stuff in cans at different times. I've enjoyed their Lager, Black and Tan, Porter, and Old Chesterfield's in cans in various points of my NASCAR-race attending life.
Boogity, Boogity.

we drink dales all the time, pretty decent stuff, tasty but pretty heavy.. also you should check out porkslap and heine-weisse from http://www.butternutsbeerandale.com/ although right now the site is down, but its great stuff for a canned beer!!

I think I've seen Old Speckled Hen in cans lately. If you like Cider, there's one called Strongbow in cans. Young's Double Chocolate Stout?
:)

I've tried it and found it tasty, but it goes down a bit too easy and would be trouble for me to have more than a couple around

I've seen Guiness and Heineken in cans - and Boddington's but I'm not so fond of it.

Look for Big Rock Brewing out of Canada. They have some good beers that come in cans.

I was pretty impressed with the Butternuts Heineweisse. Haven't had the Porkslap, though. Also, Sly Fox Pikeland Pils and Phoenix Pale Ale are available, I don't know about that far West of them, though.

Shiner Bock comes in cans, too. I only mention it out of allegiance to a local "microbrewery"; Shiner's not all that great;) .

I'm a bit late on this one, but I've seen Bellhaven Scottish ale in cans before. I also second tony's suggestion of Young Double Chocolate stout, very delicious, although it doesn't seem like the best beer for drinking in the sun.
You can find Corona in can as well, not a huge step up from bud, but I find it much more drinkable, it really serves it's purpose on a hot day with a lime.

Sure, but nothing available in OH or IN.

-Stone Coast Brewing (ME) Sunsplash Golden Ale

-New England Brewing Co. (CT) Atlantic Amber, Elm City Lager (very tasty) and new Sea Hag IPA (good reviews so far)

-Sherwood Forest's (MA) Archer's Ale

-Chester's Beer (can't recommend it)

-Narragansett (some purists bash it - not brewed in RI, but at High Falls in NY - but it was "New England's Beer" years ago before it died, then bought and revived)

I believe Brooklyn also cans their Brooklyn Lager, but I've never seen it in my area.
Cheers!

the selection wasn't great but I ended up finding 4packs cans of Wexford Cream Ale (don't know anything about it) and Belhaven scottish ale. kinda pricey @ $7.99 each though
If ya have your own, plastic bottle it.
now that's an idea! not sure how to find sealable plastic containers other than a milk jug or 2 liter... and not sure i'd want to use those. but i have seen some guys at the club with 2 liters... i just thought it wouldn't be a very good solution.

I've had extract Pale Ale from a 2 liter that had enough carbonation and plenty of flavor - no off flavors to be found. If you find yourself in a pinch, and need a short term fix, I wouldn't be afraid of plastic.
Cheers!

I occasionally transport mine in an 8, 12, or 16 oz plastic (PET) used soda bottle. If you crank the top on it'll last a few days.

Abbot Ale from England used to be imported in plastic 2 L bottles.

Yeah I just saw the Bass cans today for the first time. 4 pack of 16 oz cans for $5.99. Kinda cool if you need a canned beer. Also I've seen Warsteiner cans. If I really had one choice of a canned beer and I didn't have tons of money but want a good beer I'd go with Michelob Lager. I am sure people are disagreeing with that choice but that is usually my fallback canned beer.

go to www.indianabeer.com and find yourself a store on your way into Indy. You might even call ahead and see what they have.
Have fun, maybe this year they'll all get off the line.
