I moved my new batch from primary to secondary last night. It is in the cellar, and even with the lights on down there, it is pretty dim. I was wondering though, how important is it to have my glass carboy in the dark during the secondary. My first batch did not seem to be affected at all. Not too worried, just questioning.

i just wrap my carboy in an old blanket and don't worry about it!

Same here, I keep a wet t-shirt wrapped around my carboy to keep it cool and block the light.

If you still have the boxes for your carboy's you could always extend the flaps out and tape them to stay open, and then turn the box upside down over the carboy. With the flaps out it will easily fit over the carboy and have room for the airlock.

I use 1 or 2 trash bags, with a hole cut in the bottom. Then I just slide them over the carboy, which blocks out nearly all light. However, the black can absorb more heat, so that's something to be aware of...

I used the box just cut a hole in the bottom to allow for the airlock.

For the 5gal carboys, I use a paper grocery bag with a hole cut in the bottom for the airlock. For the larger carboys, I use one of the kids black t-shirts.
