Note that hops can be toxic to dogs. Do not use grains that have seen hops.

4 cups spent grain
4 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter
1 egg

Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Press down into a dense layer on a large cookie sheet. Score almost all the way through into the shapes you want. Bake for about half an hour at 350 F to solidify them. Loosen them from the sheet, break the biscuits apart and return them, loosely spread out on the cookie sheet, to the oven at 225 F for 8 to 10 hours to dry them very thoroughly to prevent mold growth. Store in an airtight container to keep them dry and mold-free.

i've made these several times, my dogs love them. my variations on this recipe: I'll make two batches, and that fits almost perfectly into my 4 tray food dehydrator. run that 12 hours or so, and it works great. also, this "batter" is so thick you don't need to worry about it baking back together after scoring. after patting it out into a jelly roll pan, I use a pizza cutter to score the biscuits.

highly recommended...

I wonder if you can use bacon grease or something else instead of peanaut butter. My dog loves bacon.....when i cook breakfast on the weekends, it is like brewing coffee, he comes running.

oh yeah, sub anything you want... IIRC, I first found this recipe on the bodensatz (sp?) website, I think they suggest spaghetti sauce as another alternative...

i made some with the grains i had leftover from my winter warmer. the dogs went bonkers for them. great idea. now i can split my grains between my compost and my dogs!

without the flour, you'll have a much wetter mix, so be sure they are thoroughly cooked and dried out, or they'll spoil... (of course, my two 100lb beasts go through a double batch of these in 3-4 days, which hardly gives enough time to spoil...)

If you're far into it, just finish it off and if they crumble like the Chicago Cubs in August (OK, this year they crumbled in April), just crumble it up real good, add the missing ingredients, and go for version 2.0.

I dont have to worry about making the biscuits, my dog will find the grain bags and eat them (bag and all). She also eats sticks, rocks, UPS packages, phone books, and beer cans

I'm making these right now, and they seem so dry to me before putting in the oven. As I attempted to score them, they flaked a bit. Hopefully they turn out. Kirby will thank you, I'm sure. The mix tasted pretty good to me. lol

Yeah, it comes out pretty stiff compared to most doughs, and it'll flake a bit as you score it, but the less moisture you have in it the less you have to bake out. If there's any moisture left, they'd turn moldy unless you dog hoovers them down in the first week or so.

yeah, they turned out ok. They flake apart, but Kirby kept standing by the oven all night, and won't leave the general area where the cookie jar is kept, so I guess they are a big hit. :)

Thanks for the recipe!

this sounds like a great way to reuse the spent grains I get. I alway feel guilty when I throw them away.

don't forget the spent grain bread, also. :) It is wonderful as well!
