View Full Version : Cherries In My Beer

Last night I took my lovely bride to a movie, then we went out for a drink after. We stopped at an "upscale billiards hall" that has a really good premium liquor selection. I figured that they would also have a pretty good beer selection also.
Wrong.
The best that they had was Sam Adams Cherry Wheat on tap. I don't mind SA Cherry Wheat, so I ordered a 25 oz and some munchies. My wife ordered a coffee drink. The waiter wasn't very helpful. He talked very fast and kind of mumbled, so I couldn't real hear what he was saying.
When he brought my beer, I took the first sip and found my beer tasting very strange. It was REALLY sweet, and tasted...odd. My first thought was that maybe their lines weren't very clean, but it was a flavor that I knew, but was just having a hard time placing(if that makes any sense). When I got about halfway down to the bottom, I saw something resting on the bottom of my glass.
It was 2 Marashino cherries on a toothpick!! I wasn't very happy. Why would you put marashino cherries IN somebodies beer without telling them. If you are going to garnish a drink, shouldn't they have put it on the side so that I could decide if I wanted it at all.
Second, why would you even THINK that putting marashino cherries into beer. I could understand regular cherries, because that is what it is brewed with, but marashinos are like candy. I wouldn't add a jolly rancher to somebodies beer without telling them first.
I said something to the waiter, but he just mumbled and walked away. I don't think that he ever offered to replace my beer or anything. Needless to say, I didn't tip very well, and I won't be going back.
For any Metro Detroiters, it was Snookers Pool Hall on M59 in Shelby Twp.

Thanks for the warning!
I on the other hand probably would have filed a lawsuit against the bar. Why? You give me a beer that taste too funny, I will either dumpt it or chug it. If I would have chose the latter that tootpick and cherries would have surely lodged in my throat! Doesn't sound like the waiter would have known jack about doing the heimlich maneuver either!
Bad beer bars usually demand ordering scotch for me!

Had you ordered a Manhattan, I would have expected the cherries (although most bars cheap out and only give you one). Not in my beer though.

I'm not big on fruit beers or fruit in my beer or fruits serving me beer.

Well, not everyone knows how to handle beer. That's about the nicest thing I can say.:p

well, it's one thing not to know how to handle the beer. I mean, let's all face, we've gone to a restraunt, ordered a beer, and had some orange sitting on the top of our glass. While most of us would not be to happy seeing an orange there, it's really no big deal since we can simply remove it. However, cherries at the bottom are a different story. If it were just 2 cherries, still wouldnt be good, but the real problem lies with the toothpick. Why, oh why would you put a toothpick in someones drink. Did they hope it would float and you'd see it? Gladly, you savored the beer, as most of us do, but someone could have easily chugged that thing down and gotten a pretty nice taste...

What keeps coming to mind is that the toothpick/cherries were lodged in the glass from someone elses drink and the bartender/server either didn't catch it or didn't care.

I don't think that was the reason. This was a 25 oz mug that they only use to serve beer. The cherries and the toothpick were not stuck to the bottom.

This is the type of incident where you ask for the manager, or go straight to the bartender. Explain the problem, ask for a replacment beer that has not been adulterated, and if the matter is not handled promptly and courteously to your satisfaction, inform them you will take your commerce elsewhere and advise others to do so also. Advise them that the incident will be posted on the internet, with the name of their establishment included, so the story will appear whenever someone googles them.

which, in my mind, makes this much worse. If there was indeed something just lodged down there that someone didnt see, it would make one quesiton the sanitation of the place among other things.

But you can see the cherries in the Manhattan - the SA Cherrt Wheat is quite hazy.

DJ didn't think this was the case as the mug was larger than the toothpick. It was just an overwhelming thought, and since I've been served dirty mugs before, it was reminiscent of past experiences. Who knows, all I can say is that I wouldn't have been pleased. :D

Count me in as weird or "fruit cake."
I have raspberries growing in the garden. While picking some last summer, a few felli nto my IPA. I didn't pick them out, but let them float. When I got to the bottom of the glass, there was a new taste treat awaitin'.
Now when they are growing, I find it hard to pass up putting berries in my brew.:)
(now, maraschino cherries might be too much...)

Never been there, but I hear their ads on WDFN all the time. I'm not sure, but if you drink a beer with Maraschino Cherries in it, I believe you must officially turn in your MAN card... ;)
Or, if you waited in line today at IKEA's grand opening in Canton...

There are some rum drinks that are ok with....no, you're right, no maraschino cherries.
By the way, I would have punched myself in the face for waiting at the Ikea.
