I have been looking at the mini-kegs (1.4gal) and for the price (~$8 for the keg+bung) and ~$60 for the tap with CO2 cartridge.

But I was wondering if anyone has tried these, In concept I like the small size, it allows me to keg a decent amount while still letting me bottle the rest.

Thoughts?

Wish I could help. I'll be interested in hearing about them.

I would be interested in any response to this as well. I was going to ask the wife for the tap-a-draft system for christmas, wondering if this is a better option. I don't have space right now for a corny keg setup.

Croc...may I suggest the tap-a-draft? It is basically the same concept, but uses three 1.5 gallon PET bottles and is pressurized by 8 gram CO2 cartridges. You can force carbonate the bottles or carbonate them naturally (with corn sugar). $60 will get you 3 bottles with lids, a 10 pack of 8 gram cartridges, and the pressure regulator/dispenser valve assembly. If interested, check morebeer.com for a more complete description. I was considering the steel mini-kegs when I wanted to get a mini-keg-type system, and my next-door neighbor has those. But after a little while, he was having problems with the insides of his mini-kegs starting to rust. With plastic, you don't have to worry about that. I have used mine for 2 batches now and will recommend it to anyone. I believe FUJI from this BB also has this system. The bottles fit VERY easily in the fridge and you can use 1, 2 or all 3 of the tap-a-draft bottles and bottle the rest of your brew in standard bottles. Hope this helps ya.........

Great, thanks for the info, I have seen the tap a draft, but liked the look of the mini kegs, but if the mini-kegs are prone to rust then that strikes them off the list. Thanks.

I've got the mini's and havent had any problem with them. They are kinda cool. As for rust, they have a delicate plastic lining in them that prevents the use of brushes so you must be careful. Other than that I like them fine. If I had it to do all over again though I believe the Tap A Draft would be the solution because you can force carbonate with it and not the mini's.

Before purchasing my corny keg system I researched those mini-kegs quite a bit.

I don't have the sources anymore, but I read in several places that people had trouble getting them to carbonate consistantly. Anybody know if there is any truth to that?

In the end I just saved my nickles and dimes for the kegs and the spare fridge.... and I'm glad I went that route.

Mag (& Croc)...my neighbor that I previously referred to always had problems with consistent carbonation. The problems were not the type that would make you want to rip out your intestines, but were "pains" nonetheless. Mainly the problem was consistent carbonation----sometimes the glass would have a lot of foam in it, whether first tapping a keg or not, and other times the foam would be perfect. He's a trooper, though, & is sticking with them---I think he's gonna buy new mini-kegs, though.

Tap a draft is good, but if you can spring for a few more bucks get a 3 gallon corny. they are just a little bigger and can handle way more abuse. you can also get portable co2 in a hand held gun type setup for under 20 bucks. Just a thought.

I'm a little late getting to this thread, so it's already been said several times, but I'll chime in my 2 cents. I've had the tap a draft for a few months now and I absolutely love it. Several others on this board have them (I got turned on to the idea by b3s) and so far I haven't heard any negative reviews. My experience with the system has been completely positive.
