I read in this forum that SC is looking into removing the cap. What does anyone know and what can I do to help this process? Maybe now I can stop making those runs to GA ...

Hey, you are correct. Check out www.popthecapsc.org. Also, our homebrew club has some example letters and information that makes it easier to write and/or call your representatives. Check out www.palmettostatebrewers.com. Are you a homebrewer by chance? If so, our club is based out of Columbia but we have a Charleston member, Pawley's Island, etc... In fact, we are having a brew session in Pawleys Island in June.

I am a homebrewer. I am currently in Kuwait 6 months into my one year sentence. I just purchased some extra carboys and stuff to get three batches up and going while on R&R next month as I will be home for 2 weeks (June 8ish-20ish). A Trappist, Holiday Brew, and Belgium Christmas Ale...all extracts and all from Northwest.

I'm happy to hear about the possibility of having some nice beer in the local taverns (assuming this will pass, which I'm sure it will), but I was seriously thinking of starting my own private brew tavern. I guess that idea is gone. Thanks for the links and when I do get home in December I will see about coming to your club. I have already looked into Charleston area clubs and was a little dissapointed that I couldn't find one. When is your June meeting as I plan to come to a USC baseball game while on R&R. Again assuming that they get a super regional in Cola.

Be careful and when you get home don't give up on your dream. Just becasue better beer will be available doesn't mean you can't open a brewpub. Hell, I'm 49 and I plan on opening one myself within 5 years.

hey, it's nice to see some other opressed folks from SC!

i go to a place that sells a few beers over the limit and the guy there said the cap was in the process of being lifted a few weeks ago. he's a reputable guy and wouldn't have any reason to lie so i think atleast something is going on.
sounds like it will be like the tattoo thing, as soon as i got to charleston in 1998 people were telling me it had been passed to be legal again and would be at any moment. it just happened a few months ago and the restrictions are still too strict for any tattoo business to open up around here that i've seen.
so by all means keep writing letters and help these groups however you can, the battle may be far from over.
atleast we aren't in alabama (where i came from) no containers above 16oz! i love my bombers and 32oz malt liquors. 12 ounces is such a tease.

Hey Corky...aside from it being just plain fun, how are you going to tell if your market area has enough sophisticated beer drinkers that will make enough money to keep a business like this fermenting? What about a "You Brew It" type bar? I have heard of a combination bar, micro, and self brew locals doing well in large markets like in the NW (Seattle...). I wonder if my market is big enough or if there is enough desire amongst the commoners. My thought was to have a private club that was more of a tavern, supply, and you make it thing.

One of my considerations has been where to do it. I wonder if this area could support one, but there is a brewpub in a smaller, non-tourist town 40 miles away. That's one advantage Carlsbad has, the Caverns draw a lot of people from around the world.
