and i have a question about cleaning the lines or even pre-cleaning the lines. What is a suitable cleaner? I've heard of cheap grain alcohol being used to sanitize the lines, as well as seen the harsh base cleaners out there. What's the best, and how do i prevent the taste of the cleaning compound from leaving a residue in the lines which will taint the flavor of my brew?

I'd use Beer Line Cleaner (CL22 and CL23) from MoreBeer.com, since it's designed with draft lines in mind. If you click on the product detail link, there's also a draft cleaning kit (D1600), which included pump and brush should you need those. Then I'd rinse with a sanitizer; BTF's Iodophor solution is fine for this.
