I am buying all of my kegging gear bit by bit, but as my first kegged beer is two days in primary already, I need to move. Anyway, I was talking to a guy who works at a welding supply store who will be selling me a 5lb tank for a very good price. I asked about a dual gauge regulator and he said it wouldn't do me any good as the tank is filled with liquid. He said it's called a 5lb tank because you fill it with 5lbs of liquid. Am I buying the wrong thing? I know it won't come out liquid but still, I thought that people have a dual gauge regulator to tell them how much pressure is in the tank and how much is in the keg. Am I wrong?

No, you're right. With a dual guage regulator, one guage will show the tank pressure, the other the keg pressure.

You can get by with a single guage regulator that shows the keg pressure because it seems like the tank goes from good to empty in a few seconds sometimes, but it is nice to have the dual guages. I don't think I've ever actually paid attention to the tank guage, I usually find out the tank is empty when the beer stops flowing. I was lucky enough to come up with a second tank for cheap, though, so I have the immediate replacement strategy going.

That sounds like what he was saying. So I'll get the tank. I just wanted to make sure I was putting the right CO2 into my beer.
Man, I can't wait to not wash bottles.

On my dual gauge setup, there is a little lever on the outlet leading to the keg. Does anyone know what this does?

That turns on and off the CO2. If its parrallel to the hose, its on, if not its off.

isn't that what the little screw in the center does?

The little screw in the center should be for adjusting the pressure. Or at least that what it is on my regulator. Stodbrew is right about the lever, parallel is on perpendicular is off.
