I spent 3 years living in Germany (95-98') thanks to the US Army and got to taste some of the finest beer. From the Dunkelwiesen to the "true" Hefewiessen to Crystal Wiessen to the Helles and Pils. All great beers.

I even had opportunity to go to Czech and tast the ORIGINAL BUDWIESER. Yum! Also, I remember once taking a river boat trip down the Rhien. We went to a monestary that had been brewing beer for about 500 years now. It was some of the darkest beer I've ever seen. HOWEVER, when you tasted it, IT was so light, crisp, and refreshing. Those monks had their recipe down, pat!!!

My favorite beer though was a Pils. The label read Riechelbrau. It was a great beer. If anyone has this recipe or knows anything about this beer PLEEEEEEZ let me know. Just FYI this was probably a regional beer so, I'll let you know that I lived in Grafenwoehr, GE. This was in the Operfalz Region of Bavaria.

Man, I miss the German brew. American Hefewiessen's ain't got nothing on the German Brews. If it doesn't have sediment floating around on the bottom it ain't a real brew.

Those were a couple of true words! I do love some of the American Wheats, but no there is nothing like a true German wheat!
Thank God for a well stocked liquorstore with good imports...

Sorry, although I´ve been around Germany a lot, I never tried that Pils you´re talking about.

PROST!

Pat,
the Pils you are talking about seems to be Reichelbraeu Pils. Reichelbraeu is a brand of Kulmbacher AG of Kulmbach, Franconia (northern Bavaria). A fairly large brewery but with a broad variety of beers - including some very interesting ones like the extra-strong EKU 28 and Reichelbraeu Eisbock. Reichelbraeu Premium Pils is one of their best selling mainstream beers. They also have a Weissbier-brand named Kapuziner.

German beer is Great and all but I plan on boycotting German beer as well as other german products as they are doing business with Saddam Hussein against the embargo. It is not like the money is going to the people where it is needed. It is going into weapons programs and chem research. I choose to vote with my wallet going with the better American brewed German Style lagers from Sudwerk. The same goes for French products.

I spent 6 years in K Town with the Air Force 93-99 and how do I miss those beers.. my favorite was Bischoff Pils, but the BEST beer I ever had was brewed by some monkes near Fulda.. I can get both Bischoff and Checkvar (Budvar) at the local ABC liquor shops down here in Florida.. :)

Fish I spent many a day and night in Graff........ I was also in the Army. I was stationed in Schweinfurt, pretty close to Fulda.... Allot of good regional beers down in that area. Binder, Wurzburg all had good products..........

I miss it too...

Spent some time in Graf with the 8th ID '81-'83. I was stationed in Mannheim and enjoyed many a fine brew. The EKU 28 was very strong. I liked many of the dunkles, and the weissen's were awesome. Anyone drink from the 2 litre glass Boot? That was fun...

Prost!

Are you sure that was the Rhein and not the Donau ? Since you say you stayed in Grafenwöhr (which is 40 miles from where I live) the Donau would be the more obvious choice. The story with the ship and the monestary would point at the Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg.

Kulmbacher Reichelbräu is good stuff indeed :-) I doubt the brewery will surrender their recipe though. The only way to get that will be starting to work there and learning their way from scratch.
