Obviously we all know of hefe-weizens. I stopped off at the liquor store before work today look ing for something new. Nothing really new to be found. Decided to pick up a few wheats from their 500ml single bottle area. Got a Herold Bohemian Wheat Lager(blond lager), a Schneider Weisse (original hefe weizen), and Schneider Weisse (Wiesen Edel-Weisse). I have never heard of a Edel Weisse before. I do have to admit that I only began getting a taste for wheat beer a little bit ago. They never did any thing for me before, now I love them, just don't know a whole lot about them. So whats the difference with a Edel-Weisse!!!

so It's a couple minutes later and I just started to drink it. I am not good with being a verbal beer judge. To me it tastes like a vibrant hefe weizen. I can taste many things that are the same but they seem more crisp and refreshing. Anyone know the difference?

Since Schneider is one of the few (the only?) breweries from Munich that doesn't brew a Wies'n-Fest for the Oktoberfest, they brew a Wies'n-Weizen! Wies'n is the abbreviated Munchener word for the Theresienwiese (Therese's Meadow) where the Oktoberfest is held each year. Named for Crown Prince Ludwig's bride, Princess Therese, whose wedding was actually the first Oktoberfest celebration.

As Schneider's original Weizen is darker and hardier than the usual Bavarian Hefe-Weizen (although the best IMO), it's probably not the best session beer for most people - or one that would be readily consumed in great quantities at Oktoberfest time. The Wies'n Edel-Weizen is lighter in color, body, and alcohol - a better quaffer. As far as the Edel title, Edel being the German word for Noble, I'd guess that Schneider is giving a tip of the hat to the style that has become the standard for Bavarian Wheats, to which this beer is closer.

Next - look for Schneider's Aventinus - Weizendoppelbock -- delicious!

No I don't get to drink before work. I live about an hour from my work and basically It's a totally different beer world around there. All I can get in my area is macro's and Sierra Neveda pale ale. SN is obviously a good beer but I need variety. The liquor stores near my work carry a much better selection. It is right across the river from Philly so there seems to be a better market for good beer. I talked my local bar into atleast carrying Guinness and he got p#ssed because I was the only one that would buy it. That is as much variety as I can get. So anyway, to the beer thing. I always pick up beer before work and put it a cooler with 3 icee packs seperated with a towel. This way it keeps a chill all day but doesn't get too cold. I hate having to wait for beer to warm up. I get off too late to buy after work so this is how I've learned to cope. Let me tell ya though, they are really tempting when I'm sitting in my car on break.

I have always liked the Schnieder beers. Especially the Adventus.

Nothing beats a Munchner Frustuck at a sidewalk table outside the Schneider Haus! The original Weisse or Aventinus with Weisswurst, sweet brown mustard, and a fresh Bretze (pretzel).

Prosit!

Love Schneider Weisse, the original darker version. I get it on tap at Lucky Baldwins, Pasadena CA. Think I'll have to drop by there on the way home from work...;)

I had a schnieder weisse on tap in Windsor Ontario. I have been trying to talk a local bar owner into buying one but he says that germans won't sell their beer by the keg that it ruins the taste.
I knew he was full of it, but he insisted. Isn't it funny bartenders have had such a monopoly on alcohol knowledge that they don't know what to do with the slightly educated beer drinker.

sorry this may be off topic, but i love schnieder weisse, and it was even better on tap!!!!!

maybe they also want to make the name similar to "edelweiss", the flower of the Alps. In Italy, we call this flower "stella alpina" that is for "star of the Alps", i don't know its name in english.
