I was wandering the LHBS and found a phil mill I in a corner that had been slightly used and a little abused. I have never used one of these but was wondering if 20.00 for a functional mill was a good deal. I have been thinking about going AG but the cost of the mills and that sort of thing have kept me out of the loop.

I haven't heard good things about that mill. Try Craigslist.com & see what's selling there first. You can buy a used Corona mill from eBay for about that same price, if that's any help for you.

Thanks TF, I hadn't thought about Craigs list.
I just wondered if a Corona would grind it too fine and make too much flour?

I own 2 mills. A JSP Malt Mill, & a Corona. Once you dial in a corona, and lock down the adjustment, it will grind just fine.
I still use my Corona for wheat & rye malts.
A Corona works just fine, once you adjust it.

Who says you need a mill to do AG? I just buy from AustinHomebrew. They sell all their grain in 1 oz increments and will mill it before shipping.
I do want my own mill so that I can buy bulk grain, but I've done 3 AG batches without one.

If the mill works get it. They aren't bad and 20 bucks is a steal. If I had a choice between a Corona (had one 15 years ago) v. a PM1 for $20 I'd go Phil's every time.

I buy in bulk and mill at the LHBS. Milled Maris Otter costs me $.72/lb, which isnt all that bad.

Actually, that's absurdly cheap considering unit price and shipping.

Like I said, I buy it in bulk. So my 55# bag of Maris Otter is $39.xx, and I can mill the grains for free at the mill at the LHBS store. The downside of all this is that the mill is hand-cranked, and handcranking 25# of grain at a time is a bit annoying.

Oh, that makes more sense. I thought you meant would could walk in and buy one pound for .72 and then mill it.

By the single pound, Maris Otter is $1.70.

eBarf seems to be the way to buy a mill. I just bought an antique Corona, the really heavy duty one, for $5, plus shipping made it less than $20 to my door. They turn up from time to time. Just be sure it is complete.

Oh, you got that? I had forgotten to bid.....missed the end of the auction, it is okay though, my wife is getting ready to strangle me.
Can anyone post mill adjustment advice? for both roller mills and grinder-types, like a corona.

I just had my first problem with Austin Homebrew, got my package yesterday and the invoice said Milled All-Grain and inside the bags 90% of the grain was whole.
I called them and told them that they need to re-ajust their mill and today they are sending me out new grain.
One day I will buy my own grain mill and I can buy grain in bulk.
Just need to save up.

St. Pats has their "Automatic Roller Mill" on clearance for $110, if anyone is interested.

They aren't making them anymore, so I don't know if there'd be any kind of support if yours broke next year.
