Hello everybody. I hope you are all well.

My name is Tom and I am a design student from London. For my major
design project I am trying to develop a new bottle opener that will make
opening bottles easier for people suffering from different forms of
arthritis and will just be generally better (hopefully).

Below is a questionnaire that will help me with my research. If you could
find the time to complete as much of them questionnaire as possible it
would be greatly appreciated.

Any questions you do not understand or do not want to answer; please
leave blank.

The details from this questionnaire will only be used to compile lists of
data, no personal details obtained from this questionnaire will be made
public.

If you prefer the answers can be emailed to me at
this_is_tom_potts@yahoo.com , Thankyou

1) Age:
2) Sex:
3) How often do use a bottle opener: Every day / once a week / once a
month / rarely.
4) When using a bottle opener which type of bottle do you open most
often: Standard beer size / large Ale size / extra large (Newcastle Brown)
size / small stubby bottle size / other.
5) Do you suffer from any disability or illness that affects your arms or
hands? If yes, please give details.
6) Do you suffer from any visual impairment? If yes, please give details.

Edit: questions removed because they suck. ;)

The following questions relate to the main operations and functions of
the bottle opener. Please answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. (I know these questions seem stupid, but the answers are reeally important for my project).

28) Remove bottle top is more important than Preventing damage to
bottle?
29) Remove bottle top is more important than Comfort of use?
30) Remove bottle top is more important than Ease of use?
31) Remove bottle top is more important than Ease of transporting the
opener?
32) Preventing damage to the bottle is more important than Comfort of
use?
33) Preventing damage to the bottle is more important than Ease of use?
34) Preventing damage to the bottle is more important than Ease of
transporting the opener?
35) Comfort of use is more important than Ease of use?
36) Comfort of use is more important than Ease of transporting the
opener?
37) Ease of use is more important than Ease of transporting the opener?

38) What price would you see as acceptable for a bottle opener?

• Any further comments:

Thankyou for your time and cooperation with this, you will have helped
me out no-ends. if there is anything that i can do to help anyone else
on this forum, please let me know.

Kindest regards to all of you,

Tom Potts

Foe what it is worth, there are products here made by a company named OXO. They make kitchen tools aimed at people with arthritis or other hand grip problems. They make the handles very large and of a medium soft material. Noot only has thier target market found them very favorable, many people but them for their outstanding quality.

Tom, You have too many questions but I will say that I use a wooden handled bottle opener that I've had since high school. And It pisses me off when I can't find it in the drawer. My wife cleaned out some of our kitchen stuff awhile back and tossed several bottle openers. I also have one of those affixed openers like soda machines used to have in the 60s. It is mounted next to my beer fridge in the garage.

Welcome to the board.

Is that the same OXO that has the tower along the Thames?

My favorite is a ChurchKey from a liqour store in Jersey that I got for free somtime in the early 80's. Simple is better.

I thought the same thing, but i have no hard proof, one of my house mates said it used to be something to do with oxo stock cubes.

Thanks mate, Ive chopped all the questions from the middle, hopefully this better for everyone.

Thanks again

My prioritization of your design criteria (assumed from your questions).
1. Damage to bottle. If you break or chip the bottle you can't drink the beer. Might as well have left it in the fridge.
2. Ease of use. Given the arthritis, it has to be easy.
3. Actually removing the top reliably.
4. Comfort.
For 3 and 4 I'm assuming some level of unpleasantness associated with not being able to do things so well, so having something that works for you is worth a little physical discomfort.

Good luck.
