I am currently vacationing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA and am looking for a recommendation for a retail store that sells a large variety of microbrews. I cannot seem to find any in the yellow pages. Anyone having knowledge of where to go would be much appreciated.

Sadly your selection is going to be pretty limited in Myrtle Beach. SC still has archaic ABV laws so that won't help matters. There is one decent place in Pawleys Island. I think it's called Island Liquors. It has a scant few micro-brews. Other than that, good luck. Highland may be readily available. If so, anything they make is worth grabbing.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I have been informed that the ABV laws (previously 5.9% ABV) for beers in South Carolina were eliminated this year, hence the reason I am looking for quality micros that are now brewing some new, speciality brew products. Have I been mis-informed? Has the ABV restrictions not been lifted for SC?

I know they were lifted in North Carolina as part of the Pop the Cap campaign

No such luck in SC. There is a push for it but it's still in the works.

There used to be a Green's in Myrtle Beach, which had an OUTSTANDING selection. Is it no longer there? Check the phone book for "Green's".

That restriction was widely ignored. At Frugal McDougal's in the Carowinds area, I could buy just about anything, including Scaldis, Traquair House Ale, Belgian Trippels, Samichlaus, and other high-alcohol beers. Now, admittedly, this was 15 years ago, but I bet you can still get some good stuff there.

According to the response I received from my local Senator, SC House Bill 4656 passed in the House and through the Judiciary Committee in the Senate. However, when this legislative session closed, it was on the Senate calendar with Senators Richardson, O'Dell, Knotts, and Reese's names as individuals desiring to be present. This most likely means they have some issues with the bill.

So...from what I understand, this means they begin a new two year session next year, and this legislation must go through the entire process again.

If you are for lifting this ridiculous restriction, and are constituents in the State of South Carolina, please contact these individuals and express your voice.

Amen. Just talked with a lobbyist. We are currently trying to unite in this effort.
