Well...the baseball season is here. What do you plan to toast the new season with? Seems like a Cooperstown Nine Man Ale would be the ideal beer for a new season, but I think that I will either go with a Hop Devil or a Full Sail Pale Ale. Which do you think would raise the Rangers to the level of pennant winner???

Well my first game of the season will be Wednesday and I'll be starting it with a Gordon Biersch Marzen because that is the best Dodger Stadium has to offer..... its so hard to shell over that $8 for like 12oz of anything at dodger stadium... but sometimes you just can't resist

I will rasie a glass of beer only when baseball season is over. I look at baseball bats as a waste of wood that could habe been used to make hockey sticks.

Hey - baseball isn't a sport, it's a pasttime. And in that vein, I do enjoy it a lot. Rarely do I feel the need to show up to games in body paint and pound my chest after every home run or pick off. But it's still a wonderful way to while away an afternoon.

Toasted the beginning of the season with the last swallow of my Young's Old Nick. I'm quickly realizing that it's about the only Young's product I really enjoy... something weird about the yeast I think, and it only seems to work well with the barleywine. But Old Nick brings back memories of nearly 20 years ago. Good times, man. :)

I'm a Pirate fan and yes it takes alot to admit this. When I go to a game we usually hit the South Side of Pittsburgh where there are several bars featuring a nice selection of microbrews from around the country. Prices at PNC Park are too much to pay and still enjoy the beer.

Last game I attended was in Kansas City.. I would have to guestimate it was somewhere around '79 as I went with my fraternity bretheren. Can't for the life of me remember who they were playing.

As you can probably tell, I'm not exactly a big sports fan. Growing up in Boston can take the heart right out of ya.

Just a note to make you shiver.

Got a report from a friend who attended the Yankee/Braves PRE-SEASON game and was paying $12 for the large BMC beers.

I used to go to a AA team that played in the same venue and it was, "buy the souvenir glass for $6 and refills are $3" but the beer vendors were so bored, they filled it up all night for free.

I'm a life-long Kansas City Royals fan, which is actually better than it sounds. For the last 15 years or so, I've never had to worry about a high-stakes playoff game or any of that stuff. So, I can drink my beer in peace, knowing that the Royals will be 30 games under .500 by the All-Star break. If they somehow were competitive again, I'd drive out to Missouri, and bring back a boatload of Boulevard stuff to enjoy.

I've still got 1985 though, thanks to Jack Clark and Don Denkinger!

A funny story I heard about a survey one of the sports mags did about sports team owners. They asked their readers to vote on which sports team had the best owner and which one they thought had the worst. The Detroit Red Wings won the best team owner and the Detroit Tiger won the worst team owner. Whats funny is they are own by the same person Mike Ilitch. He also owns the pizza chain Little Caesars.

Tigers are 5-0 best start since 1987. Can they do another historic 35-5 start as they did in the glory days of 1984?

DecoJuicer

Jake,

I really don't think that we should be talking about the Tigers. Otherwise, they might notice that people are paying attention, and then it's back to the same old Tigers.

The first rule about Detroit's baseball club is that we don't talk about Detroit's baseball club.

Hark Johnny -- I am still spitting nails that we got rid of Arroyo but kept that ... Wells. Your right. The Tigers did hold my attention to about the All-star game last year. I got to go down to Detroit and see the Tigers play at Comerica Park for the first time July 1. They beat the Yanks 10-2 that night. Even though they were a million game back of the CWS They were still in the hunt for a wild card being only 6 games back and only 1 game under .500. They ended up losing the next three to the Yankee's which was the start of a 6 game losing streak which put them out of a wild card chase.

Hey HarkJohnny-
How should we pitch to your boy Arroyo? I see he is hitting 1.000!:)

By the way, on opening day I drank some Goose Island IPA. One of Goose Island's pubs are only a block away from Wrigley, which makes it easy to drown my sorrows after going to three games last year, and the Cubs lost all three. Sigh.

I don't have a MLB team anywhere close enough to catch a game on random afternoons (Astros are 4.5 hours away), but I grew up with WGN on channel 4, so I saw a lot of Cubs games (along with Bozo the Clown every morning before school). So I obviously have a place in my heart for the Cubbies. I did also grow up with the Saints, so I'm used to it.

>From wire services:

The Fullerton Flyers, an independent minor league baseball team that begins
play next month, recently traded for a pitcher from a team in Schaumburg,
Ill., whose season is already under way.

The Flyers acquired the pitcher by sending the Schaumburg team, also
known as the Flyers, 60 cases of Budweiser. That's because the pitcher
is Nigel Thatch, who is 0-3 in seven starts but is also the actor who
played cocky athlete Leon in Budweiser commercials.

"This trade was a bargain for us," Fullerton General Manager Ed Hart said.
"We were prepared to throw in a Clydesdale."

Rich Ehrenrich, owner of the Schaumburg team, told the Chicago Tribune,
"Nigel really gave us a unique presence in the sports marketplace.
In the true spirit of 'Leon Time,' we'll have a cold one courtesy
of Fullerton and thank Nigel for his time here."

He is not a good beer kind of guy, so he didn't really notice what they had. He said that they did have Amstel light and a couple of other "good" beers, though he couldn't name any.

The Angels are my team. They sell several beers at the stadium but nothing you would get excited about, mostly the standard Bud, Miller, Coors, Fosters and Pyramid Curve Ball. They also have Rolling Rock, Harp, Corona and Guinness. Sometimes you can find a Sam Adams.

I hear your SoxyinMO. I was lucky to get to visit Fenway when I was in Boston several years ago. What history! What prices! But the great thing they have is the local watering holes right out side the gate and a better assortment of brews on tap inside. But, truthfully, we are not at the game to enjoy a beer, but to watch America's pastime.

I went last night and found a Firestone Double Barrel Ale on tap for $8. Now that is a tasty brew and one that put a smile on my face. Of course the 100 bucks on crap for the rest of the family took the smile right off, but a night at the park is really more about memories than anything else. I know they are some of my fondest memories of by dad.

Have you read the book, "Faithful" by Stephen King? It is non-fiction, and chronicles the Red Sox championship season. I have not read it, as I'm not that big of a baseball fan. I know that you are a big Red Sox fan, so I thought that you might like it.

Sure did, Deco. I read it the day it came into our library (thank goodness I work there so I could snag it before anyone spilled anything on it) and I got my mom to buy me a copy for Christmas last year. (Along with the Red Sox World Series edition Monopoly; even though she bought me the regular Red Sox Monopoly the year before).

Faithful is GREAT and it reminded me what a great writer King can be. I had become tired of his LONG books; they just weren't doing anything for me any more, but he is really an amazing author and that just shines through in Faithful.

And having read it right after THE WIN was amazing because I could remember some of those games so clearly and would nod & think, oh yes, I remember how that felt! AND it may be mean-spirited, but I LOVE the picture of Tek giving A-Rod what for on the cover! I have that pic on a Drop Kick Murphy's T-shirt, too!

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on so...Just, here are three of my greatest loves, beer, baseball and books!

Don't you HATE that? Ugh. It drives me crazy when the D-Rays knock us down. Especially since, inevitably, the Yankees are winning at the same time :(

For baseball, yeah. And man, do I have respect for those guys. Just tossing the ball for the dogs about kills me some days. Though I do have a border collie & she IS totally obsessed...and keeps me throwing for HOURS.

But you know those pitchers like to have a fatter win than loss record. The FANS know what they've done, and the pitchers, and baseball in general, but HISTORY may not. Besides, I was mainly trying to get HarkJohnny to get the Reds to send Arroyo back to Boston. :D

I have to admit that I get a bit nervous with all these AA & AAA pitchers throwing for our injured pitchers.

Yeah, the last time a MLB players' strike was looming, the odds on the Cubs taking the world series went way up. Folks figured that if the owners brought in minor league players as scabs, the Cubs would have a real advantage with their years of experience in fielding a team full of minor league quality players in the major leagues.

Well, let us not dwell on the bad news. The good news is that I got to see my boys in Kansas City the first week of this month. AND, as you can see, the second night we sat right in front of the Boulevard taps. It wasn't all bad.

I can not believe it been since June 10th I last posted on this thread. At that time the standings looked like this:
EAST
_____
Boston 35-23 ---
NYY 35-25 0.5
Toronto 34-27 2.0

Central
______

Detroit 39-23 ---
CWS 38-23 0.5
Cleveland 29-32 9.5
Minn 27-34 11.5

Wow have things changed since then, except for one. The Tigers are still in first place and are going to the playoffs for the first time in 19 years.

A good day for Detroit!!! Wooo Hoooo!!!

Now if the Lions can just learn how to play football.....

Jake
09-26-2006, 05:47 PM
The Lions don't bother me has much this year. I think the reason for that is after the Tigers would let me down I would turn my hopes on the Lions.

I don't know if you realize this but the Red Wing ended the 2006 season with the best record in the NHL and was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. The Pistons ended the 2006 season with the best record in the NBA and was defeated in the Eastern finals. Maybe we better hope the Tigers don't end up with the best record in baseball.

By the way has that ever happen were one city had the best W-L record in three different sports?

Took me months to see this post, but I must defend my boys!..lol!!

Anyway, the Brewers are an up and coming team; injuries decimated their lineup this year:

Ricky Weeks 2B
Cory Koskie 3B
J.J. Hardy SS
Ben Sheets P
Tomo Ohka P
Matt Wise Relief P (Set-up man)

All starters at the beginning of the year; all missed at least 1/3 or more of the season.

Next year, they should all be 100%; add in another year experience for Prince Fielder (1B, Rookie - .275 BA, 26 HR), Tony Gwynn Jr. (Rookie, OF), Cory Hart (Rookie, OF). This team will be a force if they stay healthy...

Jake
10-08-2006, 09:27 AM
To bad for the Yanks they don't decide MLB champions like they do for college football and have sports writers vote for the champion. It is this very reason I think the college football national championship is a joke. It need to be won on the field.

For those whose teams are still in the race, the beer of choice must be Oktoberfest!

Jake
10-09-2006, 10:45 AM
For me usually Oktoberfest beer is associated with the beginning of the football season. I would love for it to be associated with the MLB playoffs each year.

In one of my post I was not criticizing the NYY for having such a high pay role. More power to them. That just don't automactically win you championships. After all I'm also a fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Its been said of them before the NHL went to a salary cap that they were the best hockey team money could buy.

I like the idea of the salary cap. Baseball is now the only sport that don't have one. It makes it more fair for the smaller market teams.

Ah, rooting against the Yankees. Every Sox Fan's second joy. I love those Tommy La Sorda ads. He's the perfect person for them.

I'm hoping for the Cards to win the Mets because the Tigers has played the Card in interleague play.

I was rootin' for the Sox teams in both 2004 and 2005 because they had not won a WS since 1917 (CWS) & 1918 (BRS)

Most likely it will be a Bells beers . This season has taken me by surprise. Most Tigers fans were hoping to just reach .500 . In 1984 they built up to that year from small improvements from previous years. This is truely remarkable.

The first game was very low in ratings, picked up some the second game. Have not heard about game three. Good pitching is not exciting like a slug fest. Reminds me of the story of when a husband took his wife to a baseball game and it turned out to be a real pitching duel with the score 1-0 and the one pitcher taking a no-hitter into the 8th inning. The wife tells the husband "lets get the heck out of here nothing is happening".

Well its time to put this thread to bed. Congratulations to all you Cardinal fans. I would of loved to of seen the Tigers win this series, but it was not in the cards for them. If there was ever a next deserving team the Cardinals are it. They have not won a series since 1982 and have been there several times but fallen short. I hope this will be a spring board for the Tigers for better years to come.

Lets have a thread like this next spring. The two things I love the most is good beer and baseball.
