This stuff is awesome. My first taste of authentic german raunchbier, and let me tell you that it is better than I expected. Strong smokey flavor dominates a rich, brown brew with a surprisingly clean finish. And it's 'real' smoke flavor too, completely integrated with the beer (they smoke the malt).
It tastes like a good chunck of fresh smoked mozzarella cheese. Not the easiest to find, but well worth seeking out.

They make fantastic beer. I enjoyed it at the brewery in Bamberg and was totally blown away. May have been my best beer moment ever. Which did you try? There are three that they import.

I like them all but was suprised at how good the weizen was. I don't see that one as often.

Sly Fox in Phoenixville and Royersford PA make an incredible Rauch using smoked malts imported from Bamberg.

I can drink this beer with Bar-B-Q and the like, but I've never been able to sit down and just drink the whole bottle by itself. Its a little much that way. Goes great with the right food though.

Had the first two several times but have never found the Weizen anywhere.

They also import a Helles Lager (no rauch malt) and their Fastenbier, fairly hoppy rauchbier, around lent. Possibly others, too.

Really?!?! The Weizen is the only one I can find, and I know of at least 4 places that carry it regularly (between SoMD and Annapolis/Glen Burnie area). Considering we're not that far from one another, I find that very odd.

Sounds like a swap is in order. And don't let geography fool you. I betcha there are a half dozen distributors between you and me and they just do what they want.

Unfortunately, I've renounced beer entirely for at least the next 4 months (no, seriously), but I'll happily take an IOU if you're interested.
