View Full Version : Kitchen Stove Blew UP!

Well, my first 5 gallon boil was going okay until a coil on my range melted. Luckily, I was standing right next to it when it did. Man did that scare the shit out of me. I never thought of my stove as a welding tool, but maybe in a pinch, it would suffice, lol. I was 35 minutes through the boil, and was able to finish off the main burner. Have you ever heard of this phenomenon before? Guess it's time to get a turkey fryer anyways, it took a long time to get boil and hot break.

Wow, I never heard of that before. I just saw turkey fryers at Walmart for $37. I really do hate to shop there, but the price is pretty good. I would go now before the price goes up for the summer.

Now that's an endorsement for Polarware. There is some minor discoloration and some pitting where it arced, but I was able to finish the brew! I always wondered what ball lightning looked like, and I think I got a good idea now. I'm still a bit shocked by all this.

I laid the coil in my scanner and got a good read on it, but in my current state, cannot get the pic small enough to post here, so I posted to my local dirt track message board. I am currently dirinking macro swill from a party I had, and my chilled wort from the starter. Sweet chick I know bought me some Dogfish 90, but I am in no shape for that at the moment!:)

Cool! Empty your shorts and carry on like a good soldier.
The coils on [at least older] electric stoves have magnesium in them, so at some point in their life, they look like dynamite cord and ignite on one end, running to the other.
Two summers ago, my parents' oven had the same excitement. The cure is baking soda, upside-down pan to suffocate it, or waiting it out.
So what is the beer going to be named? An event such as this deserves some sort of commemoration.

5 Gal is probably too much on an electric range. I'm glad the wort boil reminds my wife of a corn product processing plant she lived next to in her poverty years, which "forced" me to get a cooker and move to the back deck.
I got a Bayou classic online for $35 ( jet burner ) and a fryer from bass Pro shops that was on sale for $29 ( ring type). If you're brave, a jet burner is nothing but 2 pieces of pipe attached to a 20 psi regulator. You can Google for plans. I wouldn't use a home made within 30 feet of anything flamable and you should live within a mile of a fire station.
As for names, hows "Electric Brewaid"

that was my first brew using the burner and moving from the stove. I turned my back for 20 seconds and blamo! The pot was an old stainless stock pot that I used for extract brews when I first started. I haven't had a boilover since I moved to a converted keg.
