They talked about this beer at the Lupulin Slam. I'd give it a try.

DFH website quote: "Spirulina is a blue green algae prized for its high nutritional protein content." There you have it folks. It's good for you, so by all means, drink up.;)

Prized by whom? Whales?
I hear grasshoppers are good for you, too. Could make an authentic lawnmower beer with them. Guarantee someone would call PETA, though.
Slainte!

I always think it's funny that people are grossed out by throwing non-standard ingredients into beers, especially us so-called "real beer"-ers. Beer, and all other fermented beverages (and foods!) for that matter, are essentially experiments in controlled decay. Yeast, despite it's good reputation around these parts, is a bacterium!
Drink lambics, try stinky cheeses, and above all, don't jump to hasty conclusions. If it doesn't have a Mr. Yuck sticker, you're probably in the clear!

Grasshoppers aren't bad to eat if you break their little heads off first. The head makes them bitter, otherwise they are kind of taste nuetral...and crunchy!!

I've tried chocolate covered grasshoppers. It was like eating a Nestle crunch bar...almost.

I definitely remember reading something on the main page a while back about a guy that brewed a beer and dry-hopped with cicadas, which I totally would've tried. I'd look for it, but I'm lazy.

Algea in beer is not much different than fungus (ie, yeast) or the wild bacteria/yeasts in lambics and sour ales. I'd try it. I dont know if I'd like it, but I'd try it and find out.
Oh, and if you ever want to screw with a PETA member's "brain", wait until they are munching on something with grain in it and then ask them if they know how many moles, field mice, etc. were slaughtered when the grain was harvested for their consumption. Populations of those animals drop by about 75% after harvesting. Be sure to include lots of vivid imagery with regards to what happens when Mr. Poor Innocent Field Mouse meets Mr. Havester and his Spinning Blades.
I've done that before and it is pretty entertaining. Not quite as entertaining as when I got a peace activist mad enough to try and slap me, but still entertaining.

PETA...People Eating Tasty Animals
By the way, I would absolutely try this beer. Why not? Even in the cleanest brewery, we are still getting bacteria and other non-beer stuff in our brews. Worse case scenario, it sucks and you dump it down the drain.

To each his own but I did not get a humerous reaction when I wore a Ft. Worth Stockyards T shirt to a free PETA concert on the National Mall once. Those folks are a little on the scary side.

For the record, Blue Green Algae is pretty darned good for you. Been taking it for years. (And for those of you who are about to congratulate me out of the corner of your mouth of make a snide comment about its "effects" on me, really... not today.)
I'd give it a try in a heartbeat - ever seen Naked Juice or Odwalla juices with this stuff? I'd give you a quarter for trying it if you're skeptical.

My argument in defense of my omniverous tendencies has always been a simple one. If you choose vegetarianism due to dietary restrictions or a distaste for meat, by all means, do so, but do not feed me the "meat is murder" bit. Just because your choice of sustenance doesn't bleed or scream when you kill it does not make you any less of murderer; sustaining life requires the taking of life. Just a sad and simple fact.
That said, I'm very much in favor of more ethical treatment of animals prior to slaughter (cage free, free range, etc.). Respect your food!

Hell, I'll usually eat or drink anything that isn't poisonous on a dare, but if you're going to give me a quarter...

They really dont have much of a sense of humor. I remember when I was going to college and PETA held a rally on campus. The first I heard of it was when my friend Matt showed up at my house, breathless from running, and begged to borrow my charcoal grill. I said he could use it, but why did he need it on such short notice? He told me he had just walked through campus and saw that PETA was holding a little rally. His roommate took his truck to the store to get some steaks, but was going to swing by my house to pick up the grill. I told him he had better have gotten a steak for me. He said his roommate was supposed to be picking up about 15lbs of steaks, and of course I could have one. To make a long story short, we showed with about 15-20 friends in an area adjacent to the one the PETA members were rallying in, and proceeded to grill. It was entertaining to watch a half dozen stereotypical vegetarians (ie, very skinny) try to act menacing.

Say what you want about PETA, but I still love their "I'd rather where nothing than fur" ads. The ads won't stop me from trying to kill every racoon in the state of Michigan and making hats out of them, but I like the naked women.
I may try to make some coonskin lined mocassins if I get a deer this year. That alone should put me on PETA's 10 most wanted list.

I have no problems at all with Vegans or Vegetarians. In fact, for a short time in the mid 90's, I myself gave up meat.
I have a problem with organizations who tell call me a murderer because I like steak, or call me a slave master because I don't call my dogs "cherished friends" instead of pets. If people in PETA or other organizations don't want to eat meat or wear animal skins, I'm ok with that. Just don't try to stop me from doing it.
I feel that way about most things in life. I'm just a live and let live type of guy.

Just a quarter? Odwalla costs like $3 at my local deli. Good stuff, indeed, but a once in a while treat.
Cheers!

It's thick as brick mortar - of COURSE it's $3! And worth every penny - makes a great breakfast.

I've had some of those drinks too. Tasty.
I've heard many different opinions of the DFH brew. Some say the beer has a nicer mouthfeel but the actual flavor is not all that exciting. Sam C told me last night at a tasting that it does change the flavor and add taste. he also said the beer is very green in color. He will bring some for the next tasting if I don't get to one of the pubs before. As I said. I'll drink it.
I have plenty of friends and relatives who are vegetarians. I've got no problem at all with it. I myself could not do it. I'd last as far as the first house that was bar-b-queing. That smell would break me.
As far as fur goes, I think they make perfectly good synthetic fur if you want that sort of thing.

I had this today at RFD, was a good beer, kinda a basic ale beer, little over carbonated. didn't notice anything extreme or off about the flavor, would totally drink it again.
as ffar as drinking a green beer goes can't think of another one that I would drink
well done Dogfish

Finally got to try a pint of this over the weekend. Way brighter green than I had expected -- so much so, that I questioned whether or not some sort of additional coloring was added. At any rate, it was a very clean, easy drinking lager, with a fairly sweet finish. If it weren't for its fluorescent green color, I probably would've ordered a second pint.

I'd try it too. To bad it's past St. Pat's day and the end of my holy time ( my birthday is March 7, and I have an Irish surname) and I have to check into detox.
The closest thing they had at Kity O'Shea's was to drop some green food coloring into a bottle of Corona Light, stuff a lime into it, and turn it upside down once or twice. I had to hide behind my Guiness to block the sight of it.
As for the Vegan/vegetarian/Peta thing. I tend to go with Ted Nugent's philosphy, "if ya kill it, ya got to eat it".
