View Full Version : Coke, Pepsi, or other?

I'm just curious to see what the beer drinking community prefers between the two heavyweight colas... and I've included a few other options in the poll. Comments on mouthfeel, texture, head, carbonation are all welcome....

Coca-cola is too sweet,
Pepsi-Cola is too flat -
RC Cola is JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST right.

pepsi too flat? Interesting. I wonder if that's a regional difference. I've always found pepsi to be WAY over-carbonated to teh point that it burns your mouth if consumed rapidly.
Coke is pretty sweet though, but i prefer it out of a fountain rather than bottled/canned.

RC out of the glass bottles. Being that it is hard to find, I don't get to enjoy it too often.

Sometime, try Coke out of a can (I know, I know), but don't chill it like you normally would... maybe have it at the same temperature you would a brown ale. THEN try it, and see how much the caramel comes out! Wow!
I tried this with a Pepsi and just got the urge to go brush my teeth.....
Can't find RC around here, but I can find Diet Rite. Doesn't make sense....

I'm not sure how to describe it, but I've always thought that Coke has a little "kick" to it - a slightly spicy flavor that offsets the sweetness. Pepsi, to me, is liquid sugar; it's awful. RC falls somewhere in between.
I'm not sure if anyone remembers Moxie - it used to be the cola market leader for decades in the late 1800's and early 1900's - but I think it has the most unusual taste of all. It's still available in a few markets (Northeast and Deep South) in a bright orange can, and I believe it's distributed by Coca Cola these days. The slogan used to be "You'll learn to like it" (sounds like something my grandpa would say, when describing his day-old cube steak), and it's been likened to a cross between motor oil and penicillin (sp?). Yum. Try it, it's an experience...

I tend towards Coke myself, with RC second, and Pepsi dead last. My preferences run towards glass bottling; failing that, cans are preferable to plastic bottles. I also prefer carbonated drinks that have been kept refridgerated after opening, so they don't lose as much carbonation. Among the three, Coke seems to have more of a true cola flavor much like ginger, and a sharp spiciness to balance out the sugar flavor. The only downside I've seemed to notice is that Coke can vary somewhat in terms of how good it is; to me, Pepsi is just universally awful.
And since I'm here, as a bonus, I will share a recipe for my favorite mixed drink (from college):
1 1/2 oz. Bacardi 151
1 12 oz. chilled can Coke
1 12 oz. chilled can Fresca (or Citra)
To make, add rum to a glass, then simlutaneously add the Coke and Fresca/Citra. The citric acid from the grapefruit beverage will convert the carbonic acid to CO2, and it will bubble the alcohol into your blood more rapidly. Ahh, the joys of a higher education! :D

I prefer Pepsi. It is what we drank as I grew up. Also having been in a business where I sold cola product I found Pepsi easier to deal with and not as anal as Coke.

pepsi and pringles!!! mmmmmmmmmm
the only time i drink coke is at mc donalds , i usually get the orange drink anywayz . coke is okay , pepsi i think is better then r.c. and coke dead last.
so im at mc donalds one day and im.. um thinking??? (a dangerous thing for me to do).......and i thought....if i was as picky about the food i put in me as i am with beer.....i'd be one healthy mofo!

How come homemade root beer was left off the list?

Pepsi became my favorite because Coke was just never the same after the Old Coke, New Coke, Old Coke switch.

Hopjack - of COURSE this is a beer site. I wanted aficionados and brewers to chime in on the age-old debate, and where better to go than realbeer.com?
(Oh, yeah - we have cats. They don't like leashes; yes, we've tried.)
wortchillergoal - Rootbeer was left off the list because, obviously, it is FAR SUPERIOR to Coke OR Pepsi. I still like my Coca-Cola at about 45 degrees straight out of the can....
...and oh yeah - Diet Pepsi tastes better than Diet Coke. I just don't get it....

Ok, now ya got me started... what's everyone's favorite root beer, from the beer companies that offer them?
I've had St. Arnolds, and it's pretty good, but I have yet to try Thomas Kemper.... I'm sure there are other regionals I've left off here...

Both the Cream Soda and the Root Beer from the Millstream Brewery in Amana, Iowa are top notch.

Henry Weinhardt made a more than palatable root beer back in the day, if I recall.....
.... but DON'T CHANGE MY THREAD TOPIC! GET YER OWN, DAGNABIT! ;)

Oceola Spruce Root Beer. OH, UMMMM. SO spicey, settled along the tip and edges of your tongue and evaporated nicely through the mid palate.
This was back in the 70's and I don't believe the company is in business anymore.

Sprecher in Milwaukee makes an outstanding root beer, and Goose Island's isn't bad, either....

what's the difference between the a&w you buy at the super market and the draft they have at their resturants, i like the draft there a lot better! what make it better, just because it's draft?

I have only tried a few root beers from the breweries. The one I prefer is Mt. Angel's from here in Oregon.

OK.... so, I think I'm going to begin a thread about root beer, and see if people start talking about COLA on THAT one! SHEESH......
Okay, okay, I yield. When I finally get a chance to buy homebrewing equipment, I'm going to start with a root beer just to get the hang of the process (and see if I can do it without ruining it; I'd much rather see a root beer fail than a barleywine). So, who's made a root beer that they're so proud of they can't stand it?
And I STILL challenge all of you to try a Coke at an amber ale temperature straight out of the can.

Coca Cola's very good for feeing rusty bolts. It's also quite good for removing the tarnish from non-ferrous metals.
I understand that some people even drink the stuff, but having seen what it does to a tarnished coin I'd not want it in my stomach!

Hey fret,
Sorry I started the root beer thing. My wife did not like root beer until she tried a brewery root beer. On the Cola note, I think I'll go have one now as I have to watch the boys.

Compared to the ph of your stomach and how buffered it is - drinking cola is a bit like bringing coals to Newcastle.

As much as I like the stuff, I have to admit that I heard from someone who used to deliver Coke that they would CLEAN THE ENGINES OF THE TRUCKS OUT WITH THE STUFF. I guess they figured that it was cheap (for them) and readily available, so why not?
And yes, I have an iron stomach. It's my intestines that become a Gordian knot with certain foods....'
Wort, you are certainly forgiven. What fun would conversations be if they didn't progress?
Now, has anyone made a homemade cola before....?

Are you sure? Sugary substances (like Coke) would likely gum up an engine even more. This fellow may have just been pulling your leg.
Now, the phosporic acid that is in Coke is a different story. You can definitely use that to clean the corrosion off of battery terminals in cars/trucks.

Don't like any soft drinks. My favorite drinks are dark rich coffee, full flavor ale's and ice cold water. Maybe a little OJ in the a.m. but that's it. Pop and the like are way to sweet for me.

Red Bull is not a very tasty drink. I wonder how those college kids can drink lots of it with vodka.

I'm not really a fan of any of the soda brands (my non-alcoholic beverage of choice is actually milk), but every so often an ice-cold Coke classic is about the only thing to get me through a hangover.

My little bro (graduated Navy basic, 9/10) used to work in one. The draft at the resturants is MADE by the manager/owner/whoever. I agree, it does taste better than the bottled stuff.

I've had ulcers because of the (over)consumption of coca-cola. I've never had ulcers from beer... Been a long time since ive had pepsi or a coke and I must say my stomach is feeling rather pleasant. Need I say more?
I do love good ginger ale and root beer though, caffeine free. :p
Darn now I want a good ginger ale.... Peace, HN-
