My profession of the last 12 years has consisted of pouring, uncorking, tapping, tasting, twisting etc...
So my latest scratching of the head was Michelob Ultra's new Amber. At least let me try to assure you that I expected nothing noteworthy, to say the least, from such a taste-free concept of mass-marketed beer.
It tasted mildly like a cardboard box smells...ooofta!
You only rent beer

well, oxidized is a flavor... someone should age a couple of these and try them in a year to see if that smooth-s out over time... :D

There's a bar right down the street from my office. They have a few decent brews and a lot of swill. There's a bar tender that doesn't charge me for about half of what I drink, especially when its a beer I don't normally order (don't worry, her manager advised her to do so). If she won't charge me for either, I want to taste the Mich Ultra and the Mich Ultra Amber side by side to see if there is actually anything different in the brew besides coloring.

The pub I frequent has several bartenders like that. On any given visit, I only pay for about half of the beer I consume. One of the guys rarely hands me a bill at all. Of course, I avoid the two bartenders who charge full tilt. LOL
It's been a long time since I've had commercial beer, the last was Sierra Nevada PA. Not a bad beer, still not as good as the pub or my own.

When my wife was a bartender she was the msot scrupulous bartender in town-absolutely no freebies for me.
I can imagine Mich Ultra Amber tasting like cardboard. Cardboard is kind of amber colored so that's probably what they use for coloring.

In my experience with friends who were bartenders is that they may have given me a free beer but they paid for it out of their own pocket so knowing this I always left a tip large enough to cover my drinks and some.;)

Yeah, when I bartend and tell a friend or a regular that "I bought that one", I do mean that I paid for it, not that I'm stealing it from the owner and giving it to you for free (which, IMO, is what "freebies" without the manager/owner's consent are).

In my salad days I use hang out at a bar that my buddies father owned. My buddy use to bartend and generally I would pay for about half the beer I drank, at the time it was usually quater drafts of Genesse. I never really worried about the cost since most the time I ended helping him clean up after closeing.

Back when I used to bounce at bars, I always had the manager/owner make sure that I had a comp account. That way I could buy regulars a drink occasionally, or I could buy somebody a drink to head off potential trouble.
If one guy spilled anoothers drink and it looked like it would get heated, I would buy them both a drink and the problem would be solved 99 times out of 100.
It worked so well that in one bar that I worked at, the manager gave all of the staff access to the comp account. That was the easiest bouncing job I ever had.

A friend of mine and I used to go to a bar where there was a bartender that he was completely “in love” with. Yeah, she gave us free drinks once in a while, but he would tip her like crazy, sometimes more than the tab (we had HUGE tabs back then).
No matter how much I explained to him that she was happily married and he was... just getting poor, he refused to stop. Needless to say, she played it out as much as she could and he finally ended up realizing his folly.
Then…
A few years later, we ended up going to a dance club, I really don’t remember why… (I hate them). And this girl’s hubby was a bouncer at the door. He recognized us right away and let us in for free! Also, lo and behold, she was a bar tender there as well. This is when she hooked us up with the drinks… :D
Oh, I remember, it was a new club and this was at their grand opening…
Anyway, I thought I would share that with ya…

My wife's boss would usually buy me a drink or two, but I've always been anal about paying my own way. I sympathize with anybody having to make a living in a bar these days. I have a friend who has had to give up his liquor license and sell his club because the bar was in the middle of town and his customers kept getting busted leaving. The town is small, but the residential areas are nowhere near the bars so there are no neighborhood taverns. another reason I homebrew and entertain at my house.

I figured she had bought the first one and then when the next one was also free, I told her she didn't have to buy any more for me. She then told me the owner/manager had told her to give me a couple on the house next time I came.
