American Beer Month Challenge Cup 2002
BJ's challenge
Within BJ's family of restaurants and breweries, establishments competed with each other. Larger restaurants battled for one special trophy, smaller restaurants for another. Congratulations to BJ's in Chandler, Ariz., which won the big establishment cup and to Portland/Lloyd Center (on Weidler), the small establishment champion.
BJ's brewers Derek Osborne (left, BJ's Chandler) and Dan Perderson (BJ's Lloyd Center) show off their trophies.

Before, during and after the competition, BJ's beer drinkers provided many comments. Here are just a few:
From Boulder, Colo.
"It is simple. BJ's in Boulder has the best brewer; therefore we will sell the most beer and win. A tremendous Pilsner that would bring a Czech woman to her knees."
- Andrew
"Congrats to the winners. I would highly recommend to Chandler though that they watch there trophy with pride. It would be disappointing if it were to somehow end up in Boulder. 'We were robbed.'"
- Andrew
From Chandler, Ariz.
"Good luck! You're gonna need it. Our servers and bartenders are the best in the company. Were cocked, locked, and ready to rock. Just say 'go' and it's on!"
- Derek "Doc" Osborne
"Best Specialty Beer - Backdraft IPA. The ESB is a close second. Best Regular Beer-Pirana Pale Ale."
- Ken
"I really enjoyed the Pre-Pro beer at BJ's Chandler. I appreciate the support of the local homebrewers that BJ's provides. Who cares about the born on date when you are in the delivery room?"
- Randy Dowell
"Chandler's BJ's has the best specialties and the best service. This year the Grand Cru, Backdraft Ale and now the Pre-Pro lager have given us all something special to enjoy. With a history of beers like these we are always looking forward to the next special recipe and the return of the old favorites. The whole staff, managers, bartenders, waitstaff and hostesses work together to make this a very enjoyable place to eat and drink! And it's smoke free!!!"
- Bill
"Derek and Scotty are gonna smoke you all. Surrender or be conquered!"
- Bob B
"I visited the Chandler, AZ, location and
experienced the high quality of the products. How about Tommyknocker's down the road, why aren't they in the race............for ABM Challenge Cup."
- Fred Scheer
"Doug - Put up or shut up - another great day (Wednesday) for Chandler."
- Kevin-GM
"Good game ladies. Thanks for playing. See you next year."
- Doc
From La Jolla, Calif.
"What is this company famous for? The bottom line. BJ'S La Jolla, CA. will bring it. No brag, just fact."
- "Doctor" Jon L.
From Woodland Hills, Calif.
"Attention all BJ's locations:
Woodland Hills will crush all competition. Our brewers are the best in the world! Send your congratulation cards now!"
- D. Clark-GM
"Puffy's famous Pilsner is being tapped in Woodland Hills today and that is where I will be drinking...now that is bound to help their beer sales significantly!"
- Ame
From West Covina, Calif.
"We sell the most blondy eh, so we will rule."
- Bartenders of West Covina
From Portland, Ore.
"This just in from MICROBREW CITY, OR
Can we say, beer swillin' Portlanders, the brewmeister Dan Pedersen with the skillz, and the servers who make the people thirst for more... THIS trio will triumph."
- D. Forster - Lloyd Center
"No offense, but you guys can't compare to Portland's offerings. In addition to the regular beers (blonde, pale, IPA, red, porter, etc) Dan has on tap:
Belgian style White Ale, Bamberg-style Rauchbier, whiskey-barrel-aged Imperial Stout, traditional Bavarian Hefeweizen, and GABF Gold-Medal-winning Oatmeal Stout."
- Robert L - Jantzen Beach
From Huntingon Beach, Calif.
"For a day or night filled with excitement come into BJ's, Huntington Beach-Beach Blvd."
- Monique
